Opera First-Timer Overview

The most important rule of opera is that you ENJOY it! At Greensboro Opera we want to help you do just that. Opera in its early days was a popular form of entertainment, much like the movies are today. Opera is the symphony, live theater, and Broadway all in one. Its plots are full of romance, action, intrigue, and high comedy; its characters are heroes, villains, monsters, and maidens. We hope to make opera accessible and fun, so we are providing some background on opera so it will come alive for you.

For example, did you know that productions sung in foreign languages have supertitles - translations in everyday English projected on a screen above the stage? Or that you don't have to wear black tie and ball gowns? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's), Opera Etiquette, Opera Education, and Links pages to learn how opera can come alive for you.

We don't want you to just enter the world of opera - we want opera to enter your world!
