Greensboro Day School Linda Sloan Theatre
One of the most state-of-the-art facilities in NC.
A double bill of two American one-act operas, Gian Carlo Menotti's charming The Telephone and Leonard Bernstein's ironic Trouble in Tahiti, focus on couples in two widely different phases of their relationships. Conducted by Greensboro Opera's Artistic Director Valéry Ryvkin, these American one-acts will showcase both emerging artists and seasoned, internationally-credited artists who hail from the Triad. Menotti is best known for the charming holiday favorite Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Bernstein for the ever-popular West Side Story.
Basic Plot of The Telephone:
Written in the 1940s, this charming story tells the tale of Ben, the suitor, who is patiently waiting for Lucy, the telephone freak, to get off the phone. He becomes more and more frustrated as her conversation prevents him from making a marriage proposal. She answers every call nonstop! At last, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Basic Plot of Trouble in Tahiti:
Set in an affluent nameless American suburb, this story depicts the disenchantment of Dinah and her philandering husband Sam, who is more interested in his career and the gym than in his family. Can this marriage be saved? A trio of singers, in a style reminiscent of a 1950's radio show, provide a running commentary throughout the opera.
