Mr. Outlaw, who will sing Jake in our production of Porgy and Bess in January, gives us insight into his social justice themed program saying: “This program is pretty unique to me as it originated from the idea that Nina Simone spoke of, stating, ‘That it is the artists’ duty to reflect the times. That is true of Painters, Sculptors, Poets, and Musicians. As far as I am concerned it’s obviously our choice. But I chose to reflect times and the situations in which I find myself and at this crucial time in our lives when everything is so desperate, when every day is a matter of survival, I don’t think you can help but be involved. That to me is the definition of an artist!'”
The program includes music by often-neglected African American poets and composers, in addition to selections highlighting historical African American figures such as Frederick Douglass.
